Advanced Layering Techniques

Now that you understand sine waves, let's explore how to layer multiple elements to create rich, complex bass sounds that cut through any mix.

Layering Strategy

Layer 1: Sub Bass (Sine Wave)

  • Provides the foundation and low-end weight
  • Keep it clean and mono
  • Frequency: 40-80 Hz
  • Layer 2: Body (Saw/Square)

  • Adds harmonics and character
  • Can be stereo for width
  • Frequency: 80-200 Hz
  • Layer 3: Top End (Noise/High Freq)

  • Adds attack and presence
  • Helps the bass cut through
  • Frequency: 200+ Hz
  • Processing Each Layer

    Sub Layer:

  • High-pass filter at 20 Hz
  • Light compression
  • Mono output
  • Body Layer:

  • Band-pass filter
  • Saturation for harmonics
  • Stereo widening (subtle)
  • Top Layer:

  • High-pass filter at 200 Hz
  • Transient shaper for attack
  • Reverb for space
  • Mixing Tips

  • Use EQ to carve out space for each layer
  • Compress the layers together for cohesion
